Blue Laws!!

The South is also known as the Bible Belt and after living in Montana for six years I had forgotten how Christianity and Government down south are interchangable. There are many violations of Seperation of Church and State here. In Lexington County where I now work there are several laws in violation of the Seperation clause. I can't help but ask myself where is the ACLU?

In Lexington county only gas stations, restuarants, and grocery stores are allowed to be open on Sundays before 1:30pm. I am against this law because in no way is it a proper Seperation of Church and State. The only reason this law exists is to encourage Church attendence which is in no way what government is supposed to do. For this reason I don't think it's even debatable that this law is not vaible in the eyes of the Seperation clause. Are churches in so much trouble that they must use government to keep people from shopping or having alternatives apart from Church Services? This law is hypocritical, just a laughable excuse at saving face. I work at Target in Lexington SC and I go in every other Sunday at 6 a.m. just like every other day. If your going to make a law aimed at raising church attendence and forcing people to observe a religious "holy" day then at least don't allow companies (you keep from opening) to have employees still work.

The Government is not supposed to endorse any one religion. America is the greatest nation because we have always valued personal liberty, individualism, gun rights, free markets, and the freedom of religion. Forcing people to oberserve a certain religions "day of rest" is not government neutrality.

The other law I wanted to address is the ban on the sale of alcohol. As most of you know I absolutely abhor government abuse of power, and usurping the power of individuals to make free choices. God created man to have free will and yet these two laws, because of their goal to enforce morality, actually force the citizens, and businesses of these states to be moral. No where is that in your Constitution. The reason I feel so passionatly on this issue is many times it seems I attack the political "left" of this country so I wanted to take this oppurtunity to show that the political "right" especially evangelical Christians can also use the Government to abuse other people's rights. In fact the evangelical Christian voter bloc is the number one 'caucus' in this country that tries to use the government to bully other individuals.
I find it sadly hilarious when certain Christians get upset in this country that the Homosexual community, or some other group they disagree with tries to use the government in the same manner they have, that is to say a bully pulpit. "Government is to make no law regarding the establishment of religion" Amendment number 1 of your Federal Constitution.

The government is necessary for only one reason! To protect individuals from aggression and stop anyone else from violating anothers Civil Liberties. Instead of that, in America we have a government that does the exact opposite, opting rather to be a moral compass.

Yours in Liberty,
Nate
